I can count to over 50 now. ( Kauri) I am supporting and motivating Kauri with his reading and writing. He needs to build more self confidence. He needs to remember that "he can do it." He is capable of writing longer stories. His reading comprehension and word solving are improving. He reads more for meaning now. Next we want to improve his reading levels and motivate him to produce longer stories independently. I also want to help him to keep progressing with his Maths. (Mrs Bennett)
May
Miharo Learning (Literacy and Numeracy)
I am learning to use lots of new Maths apps on the ipad to help with my counting and adding. I can spell words like 'cat' and 'mum' on the alphabet grid. I jump on the letters. I like playing alphabet bingo with the class. I have won 3 times. I like to hear stories from Mrs Donaldson. I am going to learn to spell more words. I know my alphabet now and can play alphabet bingo and find the letters fast. I am learning to use all the new apps on the ipad now.( Kauri) I have added more complex apps for Maths on the ipads for the children to use . Kauri especially likes the Time app and is learning to tell the time well. He can also count to over 50 and add numbers to 20. He likes spelling words on the alphabet grid and is quick at findingthe letters when we play alphabet bingo. Mrs Donaldson, the librarian comes in just before lunch Mon to Thurs to read 2 stories to the children. Kauri enjoys these and always listens well. (Mrs Bennett)
Skipping (Jump Rope For Heart)
I am learning to skip. I couldn't skip. Now I can skip 20 timeswhen I run around the court. I can skip 12 times when I jump on the spot. I am going to learn to jump backwards next. ( Kauri). The school is involved in a Jump Rope for Heart programme. Most of Room 2 could not skip. All but one can skip forwards now. The tamariki are now learning to jump backwards and do skill jumping such as ski jump and bell jump. Most children can run around the court skipping. One boy who could not skip has gone from no skips to 30 on the spot in just 2 weeks. The programme is for 6 weeks. On June 13th 2014 we will have a Jump Rope for Heart skipping activity afternoon for the children and whanau. Children are setting goals to achieve that afternoon. The emphasis is on participation and fun. ( Mrs Bennett)
April
Goals
I am learning to read harder books. I can count to over 30 now. I am learning to use the spooner too. ( Kauri) I support Kauri by helping him develop his reading skills. He is in a small reading group of 2 so has a lot of individual attention. He has moved up 2 reading levels this term so far. He has lots of opportunities to use the spooner in the playground and is getting better all the time. Kauri has also improved his counting skills in Maths. Next Term he will move to the next classroom for Maths grouping and we will make more progress in Reading levels. (Mrs Bennett).
Walking Safely
Constable Phil is teaching us to walk safely. We are learning to cross the road safely. We know where to stand and know parts of the road such as the kerb and the gutter.

I built a school with Harmony on the ipad. It shows where we learn things. I had to match the colours and the shapes.(Kauri) As part of our Geometry unit in Maths the children had to build either a school or a house in pairs. They had to use attributes such as shapes, pattern, direction, size and colour. The children worked well together and enjoyed the activity. ( Mrs Bennett)

The children can make a variety of characters and change them accordingly. They can write words or record their voice. I circulate and assist if needed to support or help. Many of the children are quite independent in this app now. They tend to prefer to record rather than write words and love making lots of different characters. (Mrs Bennett)
Storywriting/ Masks
Kauri I am a tiger. I live in Beatty Place. Kauri selected the mask on the ipad that he wanted to have a photo with. He wrote about it and we published his caption and put the pictures on the classroom wall. The objective was to stimulate the children's imaginations. I encouraged him to think about where the tiger would live, like the forest or the jungle. He, however, insisted that the tiger lived, like he did, in Beatty Place. (Mrs Bennett)
Storywriting
I wrote a story about where I went yesterday. I spelt some of the words myself and used the dictionary too. ( Kauri) I encouraged Kauri to spell some of his own words. He knew play and I helped him with the ending. He got playground from the Model book and pool from the dictionary with assistance from me. When the children have written their stories they read them to me and I highlight in "gold for great" words that they have attempted well or spelt or located for themselves. (Mrs Bennett)
Hakinakina Swimming Sports
We went to the Hakinakinka swimming. There were other schools there. It was hot on the bus.I liked the flutter- board race best.(Kauri) We all had a great afternoon at the Hakinakina Cluster swimming sports. We were there with TKK, Mangateretere and Omahu. Most can now kick with a flutter-board. All can blow bubbles and kick at the side of the pool. It has been rewarding to see how much the class has increased in water confidnce and skills. I have assessed the children according to the Swim Safe evaluation sheet. ( Mrs Bennett)

I want to get all the way across next.(Kauri) I keep working with Kauri and encouraging him. He continues to grow in confidence and will give new skills a go now. ( Mrs Bennett)
Bike Track
I can ride fast on a bike without trainer wheels now. I can also go on the PUMP track slowly round the low hills. I want to get fast at that.( Kauri) I give Kauri lots of opportunities to practise his skills. He needs lots of encouragement on the PUMP track , as he can lack confidence. He is a lot better now though ( Mrs Bennett)

I took 4 children up town to see the Magpie's parade. We talked about the Rugby and the shield and how special it was. I explained how that it was 44 years ago, when their Nannys and Koros were young, that the shield was last in Hawkes Bay. I told them that HB had it for 24 games between 1966 to 1969, for 3 years. We met some people that were waiting for the parade that told the children about the shield and how Hawkes Bay won it 8 to 0 from Waikato way back then. We also made connections with other community members eg Twyford School, the lady selling the flags that let the children hold them and the lady who gave the children free ballooons. The children were surprised by the crowds and the band with the bagpipes. ( Mrs Bennett).

If I let go he falls off. He can now go around the bike track really fast now though so it wont be long until he is riding a bike without the trainer wheels. As he enjoys it so much I do not want to crush his confidence by pressuring him too much to do something he is not yet ready for ( Mrs Bennett)
